Insect pests are ones of the major constraints in agricultural production throughout the world. They are known to cause enormous economic losses in terms of yield reduction and quality deterioration of crops. Out of all the insect pests, mosquitoes are perhaps the most important ones owing to their ability to transmit deadly diseases like malaria, dengue etc. Mosquito pest control is therefore very important from both public health as well as agricultural production point of view.
There are various methods that can be employed for mosquito pest control. Some of the most common methods are:
1) Use of insecticides - This is probably the most widely used method for mosquito control. Insecticides can be directly sprayed on the breeding sites or applied as fogging or smoke.
2) Biological control - This involves using other organisms like bacteria, fungi, predators etc. to control mosquito populations. For example, certain bacteria like Bacillus thuringiensis can be used to kill mosquito larvae.
3) Physical control - This includesMethods like removal of breeding sites, proper drainage, use of nets etc. This is probably the most effective method as it does not involve use of any chemicals.
4) Use of traps - There are various kinds of traps available in the market which can be used for trapping and killing mosquitoes. Some common examples include light traps, electric traps etc.
